Writer’s Workshop :: One Winged Dove
(8) Comments
#2 Lame Lyrics: I’m just going to dive right into this one because this song drives me nuts…yet I love it…and yes, you know it! Ok, so Mama Kat gave me the prompt {subject on which to write about} over at her Writer’s Workshop and I couldn’t resist.
I love Stevie Nicks (and Fleetwood Mac too), but a “One-Winged Dove”…
Everytime I hear Edge of Seventeen I can’t help but think of a dove, with one wing, flying around me in circles…because if it only has ONE wing, that’s what it would do…am I right?
Now I know it is actually “white winged dove”…but I can only hear “ONE winged dove”…no matter what!
Just like the
whiteONE winged dove…
Sings a song…
Sounds like she’s singing…
Whoo… whoo… whoo…
Wiki told me that it was written by Nicks to express the grief resulting from the death of her uncle Jonathon and the murder of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980, the song features a distinctive, chugging 16th-note guitar riff, and a simple chord structure typical of Nicks’s songs…
…it also apparently features a ONE-WINGED-DOVE…

…seriously just TRY and listen to the song from this point forward and NOT think of a one-winged dove flying around and around as you “whoo whoo whoo” to the entire song.
I’m cracked tonight for real.

Oh my…I am really laughing here. I can’t believe I wasn’t the only one that thought she was singing ‘One Winged Dove’! I truly sang those lyrics for years and one day it dawned on me that it didn’t make much sense. I too got the visual of a poor little dove flying in endless circles.
I totally hear you on this one.
Just like Machine Head by Bush sounds like he’s saying “I’ve got a MUSHY head” I still singing it that way.
What a great post. I love that song too.
I always thought that’s what the lyrics were, too.
I love the quote at the top of your page. Very true.
Hilarious! Poor dove. I couldn’t really think of any but now that you mention it When Doves Cry comes to mind. lol
Like bad elevator music! Thanks!
