What should have been a post about our Polish Family Reunion on Saturday has turned into an update on Pinkie.
Baby girl had her round of 1 year old shots friday morning. One of them was Prevnar which she also had when she was 6 months old. Had a nice afternoon and evening with no problems.
Fast Forward to Saturday morning.
Changing her morning diaper I noticed her ankle was all bit up! She had one big bite and 5 smaller ones right around it. She wasn’t itching them, so I applied some “after bite” and we packed up and headed out to the family reunion with both iTwins.
I said to hubs in the car that she “just doesn’t look good” :(
We arrived 1 and a half hours later to find the bites had swelled up and she now had a fever.
The day went on and the fever got worse (even with doses of Tylenol and Motrin)…her ankle also got worse and the “bites” were now forming a huge red sprawling area on her already-chunky ankle.
We had to leave and just get her home and cooled down.
On the way home I kept checking on her (Thank goodness she’s 1 and we were able to turn her carseat around!) – she became unresponsive to her name, her eyes rolled to the back of her head…her arms straightened out and she started to shake in a way I’ve never seen before.
Hubs was already on the phone w 911 to send an ambulance.
Within 20 min. we were at the hospital in Harrisburg, PA.
She was having febrile seizures from her high fever.
Long story short here…her fever came down a bit with more Motrin, they gave her antibiotics and we were heading home within a few hours…they didn’t want to keep her…didn’t take blood and said that she had cellulitis on her ankle….the medicine would take care of it. The seizures were “normal” they told us. There is nothing “normal” about that in my book, but we left.
Ugh.
So eventually got home. We were all still upset and had NO ANSWERS.
By 10:30 pm her fever spiked again at 104 — and would not come down. Her ankle was severely swollen, red and HOT to touch.
Back to ER we went.
(Thank goodness my parents had planned to stay overnight and could stay back w/myBuddy)
More Tylenol, more waiting, more doctors…this time they said it was MRSA!
What?!?!
They needed to take blood and run an IV, but couldn’t get a vein after almost 2 hours of screaming a pinning her down (A PURE NIGHTMARE for hubs and I to witness!)
Finally drew blood … her white blood count was through the roof … they gave her an oral antibiotic, no IV could be set in place.
More waiting. This was 4am.

Discharged her with MRSA diagnosis and since she was taking a bottle/fluids on her own — plan to see Dr. in am (in a few hours).
Got home at 5am to sleep, but not, you know.
So back to Hospital/Pediatrician at 8am.
This doctor was a joke – for real…he looked like such a slob and had nothing to tell us except that “we’re destroying our baby’s liver” by giving her Tylenol and Motrin (alternating) — he said she was stung (and there was no stinger) and that it was not MRSA.
OK, now what????
So back to another Doctor for MORE advice.
This time, my hubby’s brilliant colleague (who happens to be an amazing & highly knowledgable MD and friend).
We’ll call him Doctor D.
So far – Doctor D said that this second Prevnar immunization was spaced out too far from the first one at 6 month old. Pinkie’s body was building antibodies this entire span of 6 months, so when they re-introduced the shot on Friday, her body began to reject/fight it off — hence the high fevers….leading to the febrile seizures (which tend to happen in little ones with high temps as a “protection method”).
As for her ankle… (which you can see in the photo from last night)

… and today …

(the marks with the marker are from the hospitals to document the size/expansion over time)
He thinks that a mosquito may have bitten her and this is a reaction/cellulitis.
It’s pretty bad…and looks worse today.
Poor baby girl.
She’s napping now and still has a fever — back to more doctors in the am….still waiting for MORE answers.
I’m more exhausted than a year ago after giving birth to her.
Keep you all posted.
Thank you for all of your little thoughts and prayers for recovery.
Little ones shouldn’t have to suffer like this. [heartbroken mom]

I just stopped by and read this old post and I felt sick to my stomach for your Pinkie. I don’t want to speak out of turn, but my first thought was “she should read Jenny McCarthy’s book – Healing and Preventing Autism”. I AM NOT suggesting that your daughter will develop autism and I’m sorry if it comes off that way. But there is a lot of great information about seizures, vaccinations, rashes, etc. that might offer you some more insight on what to watch for, or do, to live cleaner (in terms of toxicity). Sorry if this is too much. I’m glad she got through it okay.
I HAVE read it! Thank You so much for the comment I appreciate it :)
It is a scary thing and we are waiting and splitting up the next vaccines.

OMG! What a wild day. Seizures are horribly scary. My sister used to have grand malls. Ughhh!
Sorry you had a sucky doctor. And I can remember my ped’s always putting my kids on alternating motrin/tylenol. I don’t see what the issue is. Whatta yutz.
Her leg looks soooooooo painful, poor baby! I pray she gets better soon, poor little thing. Good luck! :)
Oh, my goodness!! I can’t believe that ordeal you have been through. My heart is breaking for you. I can’t even imagine how hard this has been and to still have no definite answer!! Unbelievable.
Praying for you and you precious little one right now.
Your poor precious baby girl!!! I will pray for her, and for you too!!!
I’m so sorry that she is going through this! How horrible for her! I hope she starts to feel better soon!
Poor baby. I cannot believe what you have all been through. I’m sending my biggest hugs and best thoughts. I’m so sorry this is happening to your adorable little one.
oh my god. this post made me cry for you and pinkie. I feel so awful for you. please keep us updated and i’ll be praying for your family.
oh my goodness! How terrible! Please oh please keep us posted!
Oh my God! I’m so sorry you are going through this with your baby girl! I hope she gets better and feels better really, really soon! There is nothing worse then seeing your child in the hospital, the worry, the waiting, the not knowing answers, the trying to get an IV in… trust me, we’ve been there quite a few times, with hopsitalizations, pneumonia, surgery, chest tubes, IV’s, UTI’s, etc. High fevers are the worst things ever. I’m sorry! Try to get some rest, even though it’s so hard right now. She’ll be back to her normal happy self soon! Take care, HUGS!!!!
You poor poor things! I hope that she starts to feel better and that you all get some rest tonight….please keep us all posted….sending HUGS your way!!!
Oh my gosh hun! I am SO sorry you had to go through that! DD had a bug bite about a month ago that I let go and then about 3 weeks after it went away it got hot and red and she got a fever. I took her to the dr. in this small town and the lady came in on her laptop and looked at her (didnt even touch her) and told me she had lyme disease…… Ok- I think drs need to try to figure out what is really going on before they start freaking us moms out! I am SO sorry you have to go through that! DD was also in the hospital at 8 days old and it is TERRIBLE to have to watch them suffer and not have anyone be able to tell you what is wrong! (She stopped breathing and they kept us over 2 nights!) SO big HUGS and I hope things get much better! We will be praying for you!
Praying for you guys!
Hugs and prayers to you. Speedy recovery little one!
What a horrible experience! So sad! I’m not a fan of doctors personally. Although, there are definitely some good ones out there, they are hard to find. Hope your sweet baby girl is feeling better! You’re in our thoughts!
My heart breaks for you. Both of my sons have had febrile seizure. My oldest was at 11 months old thanks to coxsakie virus. His seizure was in the tub and he turned blue when he stopped breathing. Our little guy had one when he was 9 months old and turned gray. My mother had to do rescue breathing on his. He was hospitalized for 4 days. Over a year after that he had 2 additional febrile seizures in 30 hours. The second was after the ER told us it was nothing and let us go home without really checking him.
I can not believe that doctor about the Tylenol. We were told to alternate Motrin and Tylenol with our little guy. Every two hours we had to give him something just to keep his temperature partially in check.
I hope you get more answers and keep her temperature down. I remember those sleepless days/nights all too well and cringe anytime the boys have a fever.
So sad for you – poor little girl, that must be so hard!! I am glad you finally got to see a good doctor for a solid diagnosis – what a frustrating situation! I hope she is feeling better very soon!
AWWW! I got a little choked up read this post. Sweet little Pinkie we are praying for you to feel better!
I have goosebumps. This is terrible that you keep getting the run around and no straight answers. I’m so glad you found someone who knew what he was talking about.
Those shots are so scary! I hope she’s feeling better soo and no…seizures are NOT normal!! Nobody wants to see their baby like that! I’m so sorry you guys are going through this!
Your poor sweet baby girl. Pinkie is in my prayers.
Your poor baby girl. She is in my prayers and so are you and hubs. I know what it’s like to see seizures as my son is epileptic. I question all of these immunization shots but what are we supposed to do as parents? Please try and get some rest wherever you can.
