Cellulitis getting better…mosquito bite allergy?

(15) Comments

Happy to report that Pinkie is feeling much better today (day 4)
from all of this!

feeling better

She has been fever-free for 24 hours and her leg is showing signs of starting to heal and is no longer spreading past the line that was drawn Saturday night. It is blistering and they are starting to open/drain.

ankle

We STILL have no clue what caused this!

Some research and advice from our friend/MD GP, suggest that this was a toxic reaction to a bite…most likely a mosquito…that also coincidentally coincided with a fever due to (too-far out) spacing of her Prevnar shot administered on Friday. Because BOTH happened at the same time, it made her scenario that-bad.

I have found some articles on “Skeeter Syndrome” which is an allergic reaction to certain type of mosquito/bite and also heard from (thanks to Facebook!) a few friends that have seen similar reactions that were tested/diagnosed as allergic reactions to mosquito/insect bites.

Since seeing her Pediatrician yesterday, Pinkie was prescribed a 3rd antibiotic (within 3 days), Clindamycin. We have heard some nasty things about this drug which pretty much annihilates all bacteria (even the good) causing severe GI inflammation and dehydration, just to name a few.

So hubby and I decided to stay with the Bactrim (the 2nd Rx), since her infection was looking better yesterday being on this Rx. (The 1st Rx was Keflex, which was prescribed by the 1st hospital on Saturday night was later discontinued for the Bactrim.)

A BUG BITE is so strange to me because Pinkie did not have any bites on her ankle when we dressed/diapered her for bed that night and then woke up with the “bites” the next morning. We have had the air conditioner running and windows closed since April!

Of course we absolutely could have let the pesky thing in when opening up the doors going in/out.

For now, we’re going to stay the course with the antibiotics and see what happens. She does not seem to be bothered by her ankle (which amazes me!) and we are told there is no reason to be concerned about her febrile seizures that accompanied her high fever on Saturday.

We go back to the doctor in the morning.

Thank you for all of your sweet comments to let us know that you are thinking about us and praying for Pinkie’s recovery. We’ve all been through scary incidences with our children, so you know exactly how we’ve felt…thank you for all of your support.

We WILL be taking her to have an allergy test done when this heals and you BEST BET I am going to do my research on individual shots and their necessity and spacing in the future.

MMR and Chicken Pox vaccinations are next on her list, but I’m of course thinking twice, thrice and then some…

Our son is going through some rounds with bites getting cellulitis (third time in 5 weeks) and through Googling for more information (our pediatrician is stumped) I came across your post. I would appreciate it if you would let us know, either through more postings or direct email, anything that you find out. The infections have been responding to Augmentin, as Bactrim (both topical and oral) didn’t seem to work.

Good luck with diagnoses and I hope that Pinkie’s leg gets feeling better.

      Wow…that is horrible.

We are STILL not sure of what happened to her leg…it is almost healed now after a little over a week. She was on oral Rx Bactrim.

We are considering taking her to see if she indeed has an allergy to mosquito bites…or if it was just a coincidence that the “bites” turned into cellulitis…we’re just as stumped!

Please let ME know if you find out anymore on your end and I’ll do the same. Good luck with your son and thanks for reaching out — this is a mystery.

You really should change your pediatric group. PA is a hard state to find good doctors in. Too bad you don’t live near my area…my pediatric group is amazing. There is always a doctor on call that is willing to bring your child into the office. I didn’t actually have to do a lot of research though, I took her to the same group I went to when I was a little kid.

Well, thank you for the update. I’ve had my kids run a low grade fever, or get a little sick from their shots before – but NOTHING like what you are going through. Who would’ve thought it? Hope all goes well…..

I have been thinking about you all week! I am glad she is doing better- I cant say her leg looks much better though- but I guess it has to get worse to get better right? Hang in there! I will keep praying for your little sweetheart and hope things keep going better from here!

My little E just got her mmr and chickenpox in June when she was 15 months old. There were no adverse side effects from it. Her 2nd prevnar though, she got MUCH earlier than Pinkie did. I did the research on all the shots before she was even born so I knew all the facts, and thankfully her doctor never strays from the approved schedule.

      Oh, that’s good to hear!
Yes, we were re-scheduled by the doctor’s office twice for the round of shots! I wish I knew the importance of the spacing – NOW I DO. We are not thrilled with MANY things about our Pediatric group and are going to be switching to new doctors. There were a lot of bad experiences with them in the past 2 years…enough is enough — the wellness of our little ones is much more important than benefit-of-the-doubt.

So glad she is feeling better! That must have been so scary… :(
As for her immunizations, I would not worry about getting them done – it’s more important to do them, I think. Dimitry is done now, just got his 18 month shots a while ago… all I know is they get 2 needles almost every 2 months until 18 months and they’re done until they’re 4-6 years old!

      Thanks Mommy!
I know…my son is now “done” until he’s 4…he never had a single fever, so it’s so strange. It’s painful enough to see them go through the shots, but THIS was very hard on us…she won’t remember a thing, so THAT I’m happy about :)

Glad she is feeling better. Any chance of a spider bite? I have had some really nasty reactions to those in the past…

    • 2.1

Spider was our FIRST thought, but there were 6 separate bites and doctor only saw a single puncture in the center…apparently with spiders there are supposed to be 2 little puncture marks — gosh who knows…

Thanks for letting me know though about your similar reaction…I think we may have a bug bite, just need to figure out WHAT kind of bug – ugh.

oh I’m so glad she is feeling better!! I had cellulitis once and it is so hard to treat(or at least it was for me). I’m glad Pinkies seems to be clearing up!!
