ShopRite Partners In Caring – “Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger”

PIC_10YearsYou know that pain you get when you are “just starving”…can you imagine that feeling never going away?

Did you know that 31 million Americans will miss at least one meal today and more than a third are children, and an ever-increasing number are senior citizens?

I’m reaching out to YOU, my readers, as part of “Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger” which is part of an ongoing effort to fight hunger right here in America through General Mills & ShopRite’s “Partners in Caring” program.

It’s so EASY for YOU to help RIGHT NOW!

For each of the first 30 comments left on this post, General Mills and ShopRite will donate one box of cereal to a local food bank.

Seriously, do you need any more incentive to leave a comment?

If you do, here are the facts:

— More than 36 million Americans (11 percent of U.S. households) suffer from food insecurity
(Food insecurity is when you are unsure when or what your next meal will be)

— More than 12 million children are growing up hungry

— Nearly 2 million seniors suffer from food insecurity

— During 2007, nearly 18 million children received free or reduced lunch

— There are many complications of hunger, especially for children, including:
– Weakened immune systems
– Cognitive and behavioral development problems;
can cause irritability, fatigue and difficulty concentrating in younger children.
Also proven to cause depression in some teenagers
– Slow or unusual development in areas such as speaking, behavior and movement

— A $1 donation can purchase 10 pounds of food from a food bank

*Facts are as reported by Feeding America

Sadly, I knew one of the many elderly that was affected by hunger.  My family sent her our leftovers every chance we got.  Of course that was years ago, but it really hurt me to see some1 suffer so much just to get something to eat.  Stouffer’s has a program called Feeding America.  When you save up points with them, you can donate your points to feed hungry Americans. The website is http://dinnerclub.stouffers.com/index.tbapp

Sometimes they even give away cool gifts.  I actually ended up getting a free reusuable shopping bag that says, “This bag helped feed hundreds”

I was watching a documentary recently about obesity . One woman was so overweight she was bedridden and needed constant care. When she decided to do something about it and went on a weight loss program she began to feel pain. She told her doctor she was worried she had appendicitis, or an ulcer, or a hernia, turned out the pain she was feeling was hunger. She had never felt hungry before. Can you imagine that? She was ashamed and sais she now knew how aweful it was to be one of the starving children we see on TV in Africa, but there are also starving children in our own backyards.
I hope you get many more comments.

I think it’s wonderful that they’re offering to donate food simply for our comments. Having spent time wondering where our food was going to come from in my life, this really moves me.
    Hats off to ya’ll.
