Mystery bug bites take 2
(14) Comments
Just about 2 months ago, my daughter Pinkie had her run-in with some mystery bug bites that turned into cellulitis.
This occurred right on top of hospitalization due to febrile seizures from her recent round of immunizations. As you can imagine — it was a mega double whammy and we still don’t know what bit her in her crib that night?!?!
Fast forward to this morning.
NOW – it’s myBuddy’s turn.

Hubby & I just returned from our mini-vacation to Orlando for IZEAFest and picked up the iTwins from my parent’s house last night. Of course my parents were so proud to show off their in-perfect-condition-just-as-we-had-left-them grandchildren.
Not even one boogie!
We carried two sleepy tots to their cribs when we arrived home last night — shut the doors and we all went to sleep.
This morning I woke up to myBuddy singing in his crib. Went it to give him some more missed-him-worlds hugs and found about 10 bites (what I’m thinking they are) total covering the side of his face, forehead, neck and 4 on his arms.
I’m guessing they are bites because they weren’t there last night and they were only present on his exposed face and arms…he had on a short-sleeved onesie with PJ pants on.
I immediately tore off all of his crib bedding and fed it into the wash and thoroughly inspected his entire crib and room – nothing. Déjà vu from just 2 months ago!
The difference is, Pinkie’s bites were kinda oozie and looked like mosquito bites.
MyBuddy’s bites are barely raised and are a solid red color. They don’t have the characteristic center to them like with a mosquito bite. They have not swelled up or changed in any way throughout the day and he is acting perfectly.
He does not have a fever and doesn’t seem to be bothered by them — I did treat them with Bactine (first aid antiseptic) to prevent any kind of infection and to prevent them from starting to bother him.
I’m clueless.
We DO indeed have a plethora of disgusting insects out here in Pennsyltucky, so who knows…
From GOG (good ol’ google):
– they don’t appear to be bed bugs – ewww can’t imagine that…I wash their bedding twice a week – but WHO KNOWS what we could have brought home from the hotel with us on our luggage that was in the car with them — ewww.
– don’t look like mosquito or flea bites (just a thought since they were around my family’s dog this weekend)
– and they don’t at all look like spider bites – we have so many stinkin’ spiders around here this time of year – that was my first thought.
So, I have no clue.
Our house has been closed up for 4 days with the air conditioning running as needed while we were gone. Their bedding was just washed before we left and their rooms were recently cleaned top-to-bottom. Also haven’t used any new laundry detergents or soaps.
Any ideas from you guys?

If you do find out what type of bites these are let me know. I have noticed over the past 5 years that every once in a while my kids will have these strange bites, like buddies, and usually go away in about 4 days. No itching no nothing. It kinda looks like just a raise red bump. Mosquito bites would be itchy and pimples would have a whitehead. Let me know if you find out.
They look like bed bug bites to me. I remember when my con got similar bites I took him to the pediatrician and then bought a crib mattress cover from http://www.bedbug.com and they went away. Highly recommend for all mom’s concerned about bed bug bites!
Keep me updated as to what it was…
Bedbug bites usually appear on the arms and legs. (It’s unusual to see bits on the face and head.)
For extra precaution to make sure these aren’t bedbugs, examine the mattress (especially the piping around the mattress) in strong sunlight or a bright light of some sort. (During the daytime, bedbugs hide in the piping or crevices of mattresses, etc. You may also fine groups of tiny eggs there also.)
Bedbugs look like a tiny tick. They may be as small as the size of a dull pencil point. They may be as large as a very small tick.
Also, look for reddish-black stains on the sheets and mattress. Bedbugs are messy eaters. They also overfeed and tend to deficate near their feeding areas. (Similar to ticks and mosquitoes, bedbugs feed on blood. Unlike ticks, bedbugs retreat to piping or crevices after feeding.)
If you DO discover bedbugs, consult a reputable pest control company. In time, bedbugs will infest EVERY crack and crevice of a room and/or home. Once they are established, it is extremely difficult to rid a home of bedbugs. (It’s common for bedbugs to reside behind light switches, underneath the petals of silk flowers, etc.)
Thanks.
We did a thorough check and have also determined the bites are NOT from bedbugs.
We’re back to possibly thinking mosquitos?
I have no idea, but we’re finding similar bites at our house!!!
Buckaroo is the KING of Hives, and they don’t resemble hives to me at all. Plus, as you said, hives will get better with some time. If he is not scratching them, he doesn’t need benadryl or any topical cream for itching. To me, they look like bites. From what, I don’t know. They don’t look like mosquito bites either, though. Strange, very strange. Keep me posted.
If you have pets, it could be flea bites. Chicken Pox would have started under the clothing (it likes warm places to breed). Other than than…Mosquito. Do they scratch them?
We don’t have any pets and he’s not scratching them at all — so strange right?
Just watch them though, because the chicken pox have been going around lately, and you can get them mildly even if you have been vaccinated.
they definitely don’t look like chicken pox at all…that was an immediate thought too!
Well, at least you are covering all the bases. All you can do it watch them and make sure that they don’t get worse.
Found this in a medical reference I have laying around.
Physical urticaria: Hives caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin — for example, cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise. The hives usually occur right where the skin was stimulated and rarely appear elsewhere. Most of the hives appear within one hour after exposure.
Dermatographism: Hives that form after firmly stroking or scratching the skin. These hives can also occur along with other forms of urticaria.
They honestly look like the ramdom hives that I used to get as a kid. The doctor never figured out why they appeared on me, they just did. If there is no fever or any oozing, then it is probably nothing to worry about.
Yeah!…I was also thinking that since I get hives all the time, but they haven’t disappeared or lessened like they tend to do on me
…so strange…
