Finished Baby Shower Gift Set | Knit Baby Blanket, Knit Newborn Cap, Knit Elephant

A few times here I’ve mentioned that my new sanity-saving hobby is knitting. Well, I’m in the process of learning to knit.

My [husband's] cousin is having a baby in a few weeks, so last month I decided that my very first knitting project would be a knit baby blanket, knit baby cap and, if I was brave enough after all that, a knit amigurumi elephant.

Well, they had her beautiful baby shower this past weekend and I did manage to get the entire set knit finished and paired with a pretty basket and some baby goodies. So, now that the gift has been given I can show you :)

My very first completed knit project was the baby blanket. I used a pattern called “Mellow Tones Throw” by Lion Brand Yarn (pattern here). I didn’t know the nursery set they had decided on (blue and browns in their Lambs And Ivy Jake) at the time, so I thought the baby blue and pea-pod green would go well together.

Since I’m also just starting to venture out and use new yarns (eventually making the full-switch to natural fibers etc.) I wanted to make this baby set with a few acrylic yarns that I’ve already been familiar with while crocheting. I used Caron Simply Soft & Lion Brand Babysoft Solids since I already knew that they would feel soft and would wash well for my cousin :)

The knit striped newborn cap came next. This was really fun to make and I even taught myself how to work on DPNs (double pointed needles) with the help of the awesome how-to-videos over at knittinghelp.com.

Then I came across the adorable pattern for this simple knit elephant and HAD to make that to match the set.

Pretty happy with how they all came out and really learned a lot.

I already knew that I wanted to give the mom-to-be (who loves baskets) a SaraBear Diaper Caddy — we got a pink one when the iTwins were babies and it was AWESOME to fill with diapers and such and tote around the house. Now I use it for my knitting stuff – hehe.

You can imagine I was even more excited when I found that it came in this contemporary blue/green striped pattern that went well with the colors of my knit set!

I also put in a few little Earth’s Best Baby Care Kits because I really like these organic and fragrance-free baby products made by JASON.

Couldn’t be more excited for them and hope that they’ll enjoy using these little items…I sure had fun making them and putting it all together :)

Next up::
I’ve been hard at work (in this Northeast heatwave no less LOL) on my Grape Jelly Sweater…I’m teaching myself cables and using an awesome wool/cotton blend sweater yarn from Spud & Chloë.

I also just posted a tiny project I finished for my iPhone, if you didn’t already see it.

So yes, I’m sorta obsessed with knitting and yarn at the moment…you’ll have to bear with me as I get through this phase…but I have a feeling knitting has already become a forever-love-kinda-thing for me ;)

Stearns Puddle Jumper Swimming Aid for Toddlers Review

*We personally purchased these last week and after our successful weekend with them in the pool, I just had to share with you….

The iTwins had a fun and safe time in the pool this Father’s Day weekend wearing their new Stearns Puddle Jumper Deluxe Foaties/Life Jackets.

Because “swimmies” weren’t working for us

Up until this weekend we’ve been trying to rig together traditional swimmies/floaties along with a small “pool tube” to let them play in the pool or swim in the lake, but it was such a hassle to try to squeeze on the plastic swimmies over their sticky arms and then try to keep these wiggly wet kids inside the tube. We’ve even tried multiple “float-able swim suits”.

When I saw a few of my blogging buddies post photos with their children wearing these great swimming aids, which look like attached swimmies, I had to find out what they were and see if they liked how they worked with their children.

I soon found out they were called Puddle Jumpersby the popular Stearns Brand “The Life Jacket Experts” and everyone was raving about them!

We decided to order the blue and pink designs (you can choose from the pink penguins, the yellow ladybug, green crab or blue sea turtle designs) from Amazon.

Success with Puddle Jumpers!

Being ages almost-2-years old and almost-3-years old they are too old for the baby float-seats, yet too young to actually understand how to swim, so these Puddle Jumpers are the perfect solution to keep the toddler-set safe in the water.

They are specified to fit children who weigh between 30-50lbs. but as other parents assured me, they had their children in them from 15 months to 4 years old. My daughter is about 25lbs. and my son is 32lbs. so I was hoping that if they liked them, they’d get a few years of wear out of them as well.

The Puddle Jumpers are type V US Coast Guard Approved Life Jacket with Type III performance and they allow free range of motion, which is great for child safety. They have an adjustable single buckle in the back and wrapped snugly around both iTwins.

Since the children’s torsos were still actually “down in the water” with the Puddle Jumpers, we added a “pool tube” to boost them up just a bit so that their faces were not near the water. Until they get a little more comfortable learning to kick, paddle and maneuver around, this is great way to keep them happy and floating safely.

Gave them Safety & Security in the Water & the Freedom to SWIM…

It was nice to know that the arm-bands were not going to randomly come off and float away. They fit with room around their arms, so unlike the plastic floaties, they are not squeezed on so tight where their circulation could get cut off. They were so happy to have the freedom to try to swim and move with their Puddle Jumpers on!

The BEST Swimming Aid we’ve found for our Toddlers

They enjoyed being in the water all day with their Puddle Jumpers on and WE were SO HAPPY to finally find swimming aids for our toddlers that actually worked. It’s exciting to see that with these Puddle Jumpers, they can be confidant in the water and eventually learn to swim!

After a lot of research and trial & error with other flotation devices for toddlers the Puddle Jumpers have been the BEST we’ve come across.

You can get them locally in Target or in sporting goods stores along with the other PFDs, but we ordered ours from Amazon for $19.99 each.

Bye Bye Binkie!

After a very strong relationship for almost 3 years, the binkie has officially been ditched and we’ve survived the week without it!

The pacifier, or “binkie” as we have come to call it, came into Bubba‘s life moments after he was born (almost 3 years ago):

From that point on, he was a “binkie baby”…

For the past 2 years however, we’ve only allowed him to have it at bedtime as it always helped soothe him to sleep.

Well, he’ll be 3-years-old in August, so it it way-beyond-overdue that the thing get tossed for good.

He really doesn’t NEED it and now was the time.

We wanted to wait until he could actually throw it away himself and understand that it was gone for good. Earlier this week we asked him if he was a big boy and wanted the throw his pacifier away…he said “Yes!” So he threw it in the garbage can and that was that.

Later that night when we were tucking him into bed, he asked “where’s my binkie?” We reminded him that he threw it away and that the garbage men took it. He LOVES watching the trash pick-up each week, so that would be something he could relate with.

It was a little bit of a chore to leave the room that night as we talked about everything we did that day like 10 times, but eventually he fell asleep. Days later he doesn’t even seem phased that it is gone, but will occasionally remind us “I’m a big boy – no more binkie.”

He still has his trusty blue blanket and will always be our baby…

…but as I watched him play this morning, I realized he really is growing up and is turning into a big boy!

Bye Bye Binkie!!!

Adorable Bonnie Jean & Bonnie Baby Review | Dresses & Outfits for Baby, Toddler & Girls

This past weekend we celebrated my Mother-in-Law’s Birthday with our whole family at a luncheon at the beach in NJ. Of course I wanted to find a cute outfit for Pinkie to run around in for the special day.

While wandering around Amazon, I came across a line of really affordable and ADORABLE outfits by Bonnie Baby.

So adorable, right?

It was a tough choice, but I finally decided on the Bonnie Baby Ballet Slipper Embroidery Capri Set in Pink – it was on sale for $11 then!

When it arrived last week, I posted a quick TwitPic because I was so excited about the quality and adorable-ness of this affordable little outfit.

I frequently browse boutique designers, but can NEVER bring myself to spend the kind of money they ask for their awesome outfits. I know they are hand-made one-of-a-kinds, but it’s simply not in our budget for children’s clothes that they will grow so quickly out of.

Most of the Bonnie Jean outifits via Amazon are ONLY $20-something to $30-something dollars – that’s a steal for such a well-made, stylish outfit.

Pinkie will be 2 in August and wears size 24 months…so that’s what I ordered this outfit in and it fit perfectly!

Before I “added the item to my cart” though, I wanted to find out more about this “Bonnie Baby” brand. They are a division of “Bonnie Jean” who has been in business for 70 years!

The company was founded by Max Gerson in 1935 and still remains a family run business – I LOVED finding this out. In 1970, Gerson & Gerson began distributing its dresses to department stores under the trademark Bonnie Jean.

After all these years, they remain loyal to the notion that “contemporary styling can be tasteful, age appropriate, and above all – feminine.”

I think that’s why I was so drawn to these outfits…they are the kind of outfits I imagined I’d dress my daughter in some day.

I can attest to the fact that they are VERY well-made. The sewing and seams are beautifully crafted. Even the rhinestones on Pinkie’s outfit were individually hand-stitched onto the bodice.

And how can you not adore the ruffles!

Kolcraft Contours Options Tandem II Double Stroller Review :: Part 1 Assembly & Improvements

I’m very happy to share with you the iTwins NEW Double Stroller : The Contours Options Tandem II from Kolcraft.

As you might have already read, we were not completely satisfied with the first version of this stroller which we purchased last year. Since then, Kolcraft has made some wonderful improvements (specifically on the items we had issues with) and wanted to share their improvements with us.

We couldn’t be happier with this NEW and certainly IMPROVED version of their versatile double stroller.

Out of the Box!

It arrived in perfect condition & well-packed for shipment. I was thrilled to open it up and get it put together. There really wasn’t much work and it came mostly-assembled.

A very nice surprise with this stroller was the new color scheme, “Tangerine” that Kolcraft went with. Their previous stroller was a bright red, which was also nice, but these colors just work really well together and are much more neutral.

The first exciting thing about this stroller that I want to share with you is the ease of assembly. I literally put the entire thing together myself out of the box in less than a half hour while the iTwins napped…mind you, I was working slowly and also taking photos :)

Once I had all the parts laid out and accounted for, I dove into the short assembly instructions.

This is the ENTIRE bag of parts that you need. Awesome right!

A pin here, a wheel there…the instructions were very easy to follow.

As I was assembling it, I was thrilled to see all the new features that are included with the Contours Options Tandem II.

The Improvements/Features that I Enjoy Most

Now that is was all together I got to take it for a spin (in my living room for now) and check out all the features and functions.

Of course the new beige and tangerine sporty, yet neutral color scheme

same 6 easy seat positions/options: children can both face parent, face each other, face forward, back to back, with front seat only and the back for extra storage, or with an infant car seat

The canopy over each seat can now be raised/lowered to accommodate your child’s height and grow with the stroller

Still has the HUGE undercarriage storage bin that fits oodles of baby and toddler stuff

The chassis seems very sturdy and doesn’t shift/wiggle like the previous version

Cup holders all around! 2 in the parent tray and one for each child that swivels

The sunshades extend to protect your little ones even more

same easy fold mechanism and compact fold to fit in most cars

super-easy turning and steering ability!

The rain cleared here for us and we finally were able to take it out this past weekend.

Breaking Baby From The Bottle | Didn’t Go So Well

I know, I know…this baby girl should have been “off the bottle” a long time ago, but now at 19 months old, it’s a habit that we’re having a HARD TIME breaking.

Now when it comes to our son…
He is our champion sleeper and has been since 6 weeks old! He let go of his bottle cold-turkey WAY before we’re now attempting this with Pinkie. He had a pacifier to fall back on. The child is so well-tempered and is really a lover of routine. He was so EASY to break of this habit…oh and by the way, sleeping in/LOVING his toddler bed without a hitch.

Our daughter…a totally different character…
She is OBSESSED with her bottle. She hates the pacifiers. She STILL wakes up multiple times each night…and always has. Oh and did I mention she’s OBSESSED WITH HER BOTTLE.

The Break-Up
Pinkie still has a bottle when she gets sleepy. She wants one before her afternoon nap and before she goes to sleep at night. Well yesterday, I figured, enough is enough and we’re just going to drop the bottles all together.

Not so much.

She wouldn’t have it one bit at nap time and refused to sleep. Her screaming made me cave and I gave her a bottle. She then napped.

I vowed that the night time bottle was going to be a different story. I really wasn’t going to give it to her.

BUTTTTTT.

After 45 minutes of screaming sheer tragedy, hyperventilating and vomiting – I caved again.

She slept last night. Through the night…and so did I.

Now what?

Cold turkey?
This has been suggested by so many Moms and they say it’s the BEST and ONLY way…I thought so too as it was with our son…BUT it’s obviously not going to work with her.

Water-down the bottle?
This is something I am going to try. Each time she gets the bottle…the water to milk ratio gets bumped up on the water side. The logic is that baby will no longer want a bottle with mostly, and eventually all-water. Hmmm – that could work with her.

Take away the night time bottle last?
That is also another thing I’m going to try. I can deal with the kicking and screaming at naptime…and if she doesn’t sleep then, well that’s even more favorable, on my part, for getting her to sleep at night!

Have her help throw away the bottles?
One of my friends said she JUST used this technique with her 19-month-old just recently and it worked. That’s awesome. I would love to use that method, but my daughter just wouldn’t “get it”…same thing with the whole “bottle fairy” technique. She just doesn’t understand that sort of thing yet.

Just let her keep it?
A few Moms told me that they let their little ones keep the night time bottle until their little ones turned 2. My ULTIMATE concern with this one (and why I REALLY want to get rid of the bottle in the first place) is to save her teeth. I have heard horrible stories about the dental work needed later-on from “bottle rot”. I’ve also heard that keeping them on the bottle too long can lead to braces later on in life.

Replacing the nipples with a sippy top?
She does just fine with regular sippy cups during the day, that I feel like this might be going-backwards if I add the already-familiar sippy top to her bottle…that would confuse her and she’d throw a fit for sure.

So now what?
Today is another day and I know this has carried on for WAY TOO LONG for my liking. What do you think? Do you let your child get absolutely SICK to the point of not being able to breathe and vomiting? Do you think I should take a more gentle approach and ease her into the transition of going bottle-less? What did YOU do and how did YOUR child react?

PS – Thank You to EVERYONE who has already offered me some advice on this. I’m just not sure about which route I want to take now…

Was chatting with a few people on Twitter and even Jen’s comment (down there) just came through as I was posting this…

I think that the Nuby sippy cups might be exactly what she needs. My son didn’t really care for them and we tossed them because they became a game about seeing how much water he could pour on the floor (ugh boys!).

I think that with her teething the soft BPA free cup/spout it may just help her with losing the bottle – they’ve been ordered, so we’ll see…going to try BOTH styles…

We recently ventured out with the iTwins to our local Safeway Store (Genuardi’s) here in PA, to pick up some Fiber One Yogurt along with groceries for the week.

Fiber One is available in a variety of flavors including, Strawberry, Peach, Vanilla and Key Lime Pie – ummm yum. I’ve tried all 4 flavors and have to say I enjoy them all.

Fiber One Yogurts have a very smooth consistency and are not-at-all bitter or tart, like I’ve found other low-calorie yogurts to be. They have a just-sweet-enough taste to them with a lot of flavor. The Key Lime Pie flavor…tastes just like a pie!

Meet Mommy Blogger, MamaJoss…

My Irish Twins is my blog about our two little ones who were born less than a year apart. 363 days apart, to be exact. While their close-spacing-apart wasn’t exactly planned, they have been the BEST thing in the world to happen to my husband and I…twice!

This blog was started back in March 2009 as a way to meet other parents and keep my family and friends updated on our daily lives out here in Pennsylvania.

The “iTwins”, as I will refer to them collectively, (hehe) turned 1 year old (my daughter) and 2 years old (my son) in August.

Currently a stay-at-home Mom, this blog is my “Mommy Time” hobby. I enjoy working on both the design elements and posts from the comfort of my kitchen island whenever I’m not building Lego towers and dress up with my toddlers.

Meet Our Family

My husband and I are originally from The New Jersey Shore but moved to Southeast Pennsylvania in 2006 right after we got married for his job.

I worked outside of Philly with an advertising agency up until I got pregnant with our first-born.

Our son (Bubba, we’ll call him here) was born in August 6, 2007.

3 months later we found out that we were once again expecting. This time a girl.

Pinkie (we’ll call her here) was born 363 days after our son on August 4, 2008. We brought her home from the hospital on his first Birthday.

I rarely step into my everyday life with the iTwins wearing anything fancier than sweatpants or jeans. I’m a Stay at Home Mom and this is my job, so I dress the part.

I’m always ready to plop on the floor to play with the kids or scrape mashed-up food off the floor – glamorous, I know.

So when I found out about Moms R The Best and their line of cleverly-quoted apparel for Moms, I was excited to toss my husband’s over-sized T-shirts to the side for a more stylish way to dress as a Mom.

Moms R The Best T-shirts “say it all” about what Moms do and they are just FUN to wear!

When the Owner of Moms R The Best, Cheryl (who is also a proud Mommy of Irish Twins), asked me to try out one of her long sleeve shirts, I couldn’t resist the one screen-printed with the saying “I’m a busy mom, I need a CLONE”.

It’s always TWO against ONE in this house, so this T-shirt really says it all while showing the geeky-tech-mommy side of me to boot! Geek is chic these days – haven’t you heard?

This long-sleeve tee has quickly become one of my favorites to wear. It is soft and fits wonderfully. I ordered an XL because I knew I’d be wearing it OVER short-sleeve tees…and let’s be honest here people, I have some left-over baby-weight sitting nicely on my hips.

But, even with that being said, the style of the shirt is pretty complimentary as it is tailored with a “feminine fit”. Nothing worse than the boxy style of my husbands shirts…which I tend to grab to throw on most days.
